Keep Safety In Mind For Every Step You Stride

Falls are one of the leading causes of hospital admissions as people age. With the incidence of falls increasing exponentially with age, there is a pressing need to prioritize fall prevention. This is essential not only for maintaining function and improving quality of life but also for alleviating strain on the healthcare system.

The consequences of falls can vary from mild to severe. Mild consequences include decreased self-confidence, fear of falling, and a diminished quality of life. Severe consequences may involve fractures, institutionalisation, and an increased risk of death. Therefore, there are several strategies we can use to prevent falls within the home.

Firstly, the setup or arrangement of the home environment plays a crucial role in fall prevention. By tailoring the home to suit an individual’s lifestyle, the risk of falls can be significantly reduced. Our occupational therapists can assess all areas within the home, identifying and eliminating potential hazards such as loose rugs and inadequate lighting. Additionally, they can provide consultations regarding home modifications and minor installations, such as rearranging furniture to allow for adequate circulation space, modifying uneven steps, and installing handrail support in the bathroom to enhance safety within the home environment.

Secondly, the use of assistive devices and equipment is another important aspect of fall prevention. Adaptive equipment, such as a shower chair or electric recliners, can provide additional support and stability, particularly in high-risk areas like the bathroom. Similarly, wearing appropriate footwear and socks with non-slip bases or safe slippers can reduce the risk of falls.

Stay tuned for our next blog, where we will cover more strategies. Thank you for reading.
